Installing a Home Security System

!±8± Installing a Home Security System

A home security system is an important tool for the safety of your home. There are security systems that will require you to ask a professional in order for it to be installed. However, there are also systems that are relatively simple to set-up, one that you can do by yourself. It would be a good idea to do the installation by yourself, as it would be an educational experience for you and will be significantly less expensive, because then you will not have to spend extra money for a professional to install the device.

Basic Things to be Done

Installation of any simple security alarm system generally involves these steps: mounting of the sounder, attaching the switches to the sounder and connecting the battery to the system. When mounting the sounder or the source of the sound, it is important to take note that the sounder should be placed where it can be easily heard.

Things to Remember With Simple Security Alarm Kits

The most common sounders used for simple security systems are loud buzzers or bells. Because these alarm kits are battery-operated, it will still remain to function even in the event of power outages. The sounder will still go off if it is triggered by a possible intruder. In order to keep your alarm system effective, make sure to regularly replace its batteries.

The Closed-Circuit Alarm System

Most do-it-yourself alarm kits have a closed circuit system. In this kind of system, all the switches are involved in the wiring loop. With this, if any window or door is used by an intruder or burglar for a forced entry, the alarm (or sounder) will immediately set off, continuing to make a sound until you switch the circuit off. The sounder will also be turned off when the battery is exhausted. Also, most closed-circuit alarms have a built-in electronic switch that is located in the sounder. This is an added security feature of the equipment. The person who can turn the alarm off should have a key to the switch. Only the person with that key will also be the one that can reset the system.

Installing the Components of a Simple Alarm System

First thing that needs to be done is to install the alarm's sound source. Again, you need to find a location where the sounder can be most heard. You can also put it in a place where it can be seen, to scare burglars away. For outdoor installation, drill holes for the wires. It is recommended that you also install a protective metal box to shield the sounder from the weather. If you are installing the sounder inside the house, there would be no need to install a protective box. The alarm kit usually includes a backplate for mounting.

When installing the switches, remember that the magnet goes on the window or door and the switch goes on the doorjamb or the frame of the window. Position these parts such that they are almost touching. These are basically some things to remember when installing a home security system.
